Here's what the gurus never tell you.

I’m sure you’ve heard this from the folks on youtube when you’re looking for help optimizing your profile on Upwork.

Add keywords…

And then they proceed to give you information that you then gotta try and figure out how to apply to your own efforts.

I’m gonna say the same, but that’s not this.

Add keywords…

The thing you need to understand about keywords on Upwork is this:

Keywords = Categories and or Skills.

What do I mean by that? Consider how your profile even gets in front of a client.

Most people only think of when the client uses the search field but the pros and top earners know that it’s when Upwork suggests you as a freelancer to be invited to their job.

When a client is browsing for freelancers using the search function, there’s a high likelihood they’re going to use the suggested keyword that Upwork provides after they begin typing.

This is actually a category or skill that you can match in your profile under the category and skill tags and in your headline and intro text.

When a client creates a job on Upwork, they’re asked to select categories and skills.

These are the keywords you want to use in your profile.

To find the keywords that clients are using, all you have to do is browse jobs.

Use the keywords (skills/category) that match what you do in your profile.

That’s profile optimization.

To take it a step further, if you follow my advise from the previous post, once you start collecting job history in these categories, it boosts your efforts.

If you want to get really into the weeds, you can start a client account and start a new job.

Don’t publish the job unless you really intend to hire someone though.

Here’s what it looks like and where you can get more keyword ideas

Match theses with what you do, with what is common in the job search.

That’s how you do profile optimization.
